TEDGlobal 2011 Wrap-Up

This was originally posted on the TEDxWaterloo blog here.

In July, I had a unique opportunity to take part in TEDGlobal 2011: “The Stuff of Life” in Edinburgh. TEDGlobal, a relatively new program from TED has typically taken place in Oxford (for the initial three years), moved this year to the beautiful city of Edinburgh for the first time. It’s difficult to put into words the experience I had, but I’m going to try.

TEDGlobal – Evolving Perspectives

This is a post that I originally wrote for the TEDx blog: http://tedx.tumblr.com – the full post is available here: http://tedx.tumblr.com/post/7611891719/tedx-at-tedglobal-experiences-6-evolving-perspectives

I thought I had problems. You see, as the Organizer of TEDxWaterloo in Canada, we put on a pretty big show. We’ve had budget restrictions, a speaker who wouldn’t return our calls and even serious disagreements amongst members of our team. I thought I had problems. Then I arrived at TEDGlobal in Edinburgh and realized just how small my problems really were.

Woke Up in French

Woke Up in French

Yesterday I woke up in French. Yes, I meant French, the language. Let me take a step back… Two days ago I departed Toronto heading to Paris (cheapest places to fly into in Europe these days…

Eventually making my way to TEDGlobal in Edinburgh, but I’ll save that for another post) and after connecting through Montreal, a short (compared to going to Bangkok earlier this year) flight later I was in Paris. As I stepped off the plane and made my way to look for my baggage, something odd happened. I was thinking in French.

Even now since arriving in Prague, I can’t seem to turn it off. Feels great to know the language is still deeply embedded in my brain somewhere even if I don’t use it too often. Can’t wait to go to Germany next week and switch over to another language!

My New Camera!!!

My New Camera!!!

Well, here she is… Yes, she is sparkly, gold and analog. 35 mm is back! Oh, and there’s no viewfinder. And it’s a fisheye lens. And it cost < $30. Picked it up in Chicago and carried it around for a few days while traveling. Here is what happened: (note, we used some pretty click C-41 yellow/red tinted film – NO PHOTOSHOPPING OF ANY OF THESE).

It’s been a fun experience going back to my roots and doing some analog photography. No second chances since each shot you take uses up a frame of film. Such a huge change from my patterns, but I hope it has a positive influence on my digital photography as well (no more shooting 30 of the same picture just to hope for one good one!)

My Kind of Town

Had a great chance to visit Chicago last weekend… Been about two years since I was last there (St. Patrick’s day, 2009) and it was a fun visit! Got to catch up with two of my best friends and the road trip driving there was great (even if Jeff didn’t have a valid passport and we had to weasel our way across the border). Read on through for just a few pictures :)

built in 1963…

One of the most beautiful churches I have stepped into. Church of Notre Dame in Paris… Just happened to pass by while on a 12 hour layover coming home from Egypt because of an airline strike. Best strike ever! Thanks Air France… Update: turns out if you are ever looking for an airline that goes on strike a lot, check out Air France, apparently it’s pretty much an annual tradition!
