RIM’s Role in Our Community

This article first appeared in The Record on July 4, 2011. The original article can be seen here(as well as comments that people left).

I left my job at RIM almost a year ago now. I did so in order to pursue other opportunities, but after my tenure there I feel very close to much of what is currently happening within the company and our community at large.

Woke Up in French

Woke Up in French

Yesterday I woke up in French. Yes, I meant French, the language. Let me take a step back… Two days ago I departed Toronto heading to Paris (cheapest places to fly into in Europe these days…

Eventually making my way to TEDGlobal in Edinburgh, but I’ll save that for another post) and after connecting through Montreal, a short (compared to going to Bangkok earlier this year) flight later I was in Paris. As I stepped off the plane and made my way to look for my baggage, something odd happened. I was thinking in French.

Even now since arriving in Prague, I can’t seem to turn it off. Feels great to know the language is still deeply embedded in my brain somewhere even if I don’t use it too often. Can’t wait to go to Germany next week and switch over to another language!

KW Awesome Foundation Launches

Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of working with Gabrielle & Cate as well as more recently, a team of 12 trustees (Cate is one of them) on launching the KW Awesome Foundation. In a nutshell, the board of trustees gets together every other month, hears pitches about “awesome ideas” (we define awesome as: we know it when we see it) and then awards $1000 to the top idea. A second, $200 prizeis awarded to the “people’s choice” (voted on by the audience).

My New Camera!!!

My New Camera!!!

Well, here she is… Yes, she is sparkly, gold and analog. 35 mm is back! Oh, and there’s no viewfinder. And it’s a fisheye lens. And it cost < $30. Picked it up in Chicago and carried it around for a few days while traveling. Here is what happened: (note, we used some pretty click C-41 yellow/red tinted film – NO PHOTOSHOPPING OF ANY OF THESE).

It’s been a fun experience going back to my roots and doing some analog photography. No second chances since each shot you take uses up a frame of film. Such a huge change from my patterns, but I hope it has a positive influence on my digital photography as well (no more shooting 30 of the same picture just to hope for one good one!)

My Kind of Town

My Kind of Town

Had a great chance to visit Chicago last weekend… Been about two years since I was last there (St. Patrick’s day, 2009) and it was a fun visit! Got to catch up with two of my best friends and the road trip driving there was great (even if Jeff didn’t have a valid passport and we had to weasel our way across the border). Read on through for just a few pictures :)
